Review and Buy: Nylabone DuraChew X Bone

Mollie is my 18-month-old miniature schnauzer and the love of my husband’s life. She’s his little girl. It’s endearing to see how much he loves her and wants what is best for her.

Our vet recently told us that for her age, Mollie has a dangerous build-up of tartar on her molars that he doesn’t usually see on dogs her age. This concerned us and we set out to take her oral health more seriously.

We bought three different types of toothbrushes. The first you slip on your finger. The next was a regular toothbrush. The third was a three-sided toothbrush that I figured would get the whole tooth instead of fiddling around your dog’s mouth trying to get the front, back, and tip. Out of all three, I believe the third was the best. However, Mollie fought us tooth and nail (literally) during this process.

Next, we tried chewing toys such as Nylabone’s FlexiChew (formerly known as Gumabone). The FlexiChew is chicken flavored and she showed mild interest in it but nothing like my dogs of the past did. Mollie will chew on this bone for about five minutes then get bored and go look for something else to do. Also, with the FlexiChew, it’s great for dogs that are teething as it’s rubbery polymer is made for that. Mollie has her adult teeth, now we need something to engage her in chewing while removing her plaque buildup.

I’ve always been a fan of Nylabone products for my dogs. They are a United States based company that has been creating dog chew toys since 1955. They make a variety of chew toys, from edible chew treats to their classic bones. They also offer a Satisfaction Guarantee (which means if you don’t like it, you can send it to Nylabone for a replacement).

I came across the Nylabone DuraChew X Bone on Chewy’s site and it piqued my interest. It’s beef flavored and labeled for Power Chewers (their strongest line of bones). Mollie isn’t what I would classify as a power chewer but the cross bone shape was something different that I wanted to try as it looked easier for her to hold.

Mollie is like me – she loves getting gifts. When it arrived I let her know I had a treat for her and she was excited while I was opening the box. It always amazes me how much these beautiful creatures actually understand! When I presented it to her, she danced with excitement. She gently grabbed it out of my hand, dropped it to the ground, and sniffed it. She looked back at me to make sure I didn’t have anything else, then picked it up and trotted away with it.

She seemed to enjoy the shape of it as she played with it a bit. After a minute, she found an appropriate angle and began chewing on it. To my delight, the angle she chose allowed another branch of the toy to extend around her molars. She still prefers fuzzy toys that squeak, but she does chew on this for periods of time. It leaves absolutely no mess and is not a choking hazard. It’s one of the only chew toys I trust to leave in her crate with her when we go away. It was a good find and I am recommending it to anyone looking for a durable, quality chew toy for their dog.
